Prof Catriona Hurd

Chief Investigator

Bio

Dr Catriona Hurd leads the development of biologically sustainable water treatment systems for onshore aquaculture. She is a seaweed physiologist with 28 years’ experience in the environmental regulation of seaweed growth by nitrogen, water motion, temperature, pH and CO2. She has substantial experience in seaweed-animal nutritional interactions, with a focus on how ammonium excreted by invertebrates can stimulate seaweed productivity. Her current focus on how seaweeds regulate seawater pH, with a view to improving environmental conditions for calcifying invertebrates will be a critical research component in this project.
